B. Answer in 100–150 words:

1. Give a detailed account of all thoughts and questions in the narrator's mind while accompanying Aditya from the tea shop to Sanyal’s house.
After witnessing the interaction between Aditya and Mr. Sanyal at the tea shop, the narrator noticed a sudden change in Aditya’s mood. Curious and puzzled, he kept wondering why Aditya seemed disturbed. He was intrigued when Aditya insisted on visiting his ancestral house, especially the attic. The narrator observed every action closely—from the moment Aditya retrieved something from the ventilator to the visit to the jeweller. Although tempted, he did not question Aditya. His curiosity grew as he watched Aditya heading to meet Sanyal again. The narrator understood that something from Aditya’s past had resurfaced, perhaps a mistake or a regret that Aditya now wanted to correct. Finally, when Aditya handed over the money and admitted to taking Sanyal’s medal, the narrator realized that Aditya had matured and was trying to right a wrong.

2. ‘Man does change with time’-What were the various changes that came about in Aditya?
Aditya, once a jealous and dishonest boy, had changed significantly over time. As a child, he had taken Sanyal’s prize medal out of envy and lied about losing it. Years later, the encounter with Sanyal triggered guilt and introspection. The mature Aditya, now a successful businessman, realized his mistake and felt the need to correct it. This prompted him to visit his old home, retrieve the medal he had hidden for nearly three decades, and offer either the medal or its value to Sanyal. He also humbly accepted Sanyal’s justified anger without trying to defend his past behavior. This transformation showed that time had brought wisdom, humility, and a sense of justice to Aditya, reflecting the truth in the statement “Man does change with time.”

3. Give a brief character sketch of Sasanka Sanyal.
Sasanka Sanyal was a dignified and self-respecting man, despite facing tremendous personal loss and poverty. He had been a bright student and won a prize for recitation, which was taken away by Aditya. Though life had not been kind to him—he lost his wife and son and sold his land to get his daughter married—he never lost his self-respect. He regularly visited the tea shop, paid for what he consumed, and never asked for help. Even when Aditya offered him money, he refused it, showing he valued the medal more than compensation. Sanyal was articulate, emotional, and had a sharp memory, as shown when he recited the same poem from his childhood. His character reflected resilience, pride, and grace, making him a memorable and admirable figure in the story.

Read the following letter from a parent toher son’s coach and answer the questions given below:

Dear coach,

Thanks for the special gifts that you have given to my child. You learned his name and spoke it often. You taught him the basics of the sport as well as special ways to improve and excel. Although you had a whole team of kids to mentor, you took time for individual instruction where needed. Under your care, I have watched him transform from a timid, doubting child to a strong, happy player willing to give all for the team. Throughout the season when he gave his best, even though it was not quite enough to gain that extra point, you recognised his contribution with a pat on the back and encouraging words.

Your wise approach showed him that, although winning is a goal, there are other goals just as worthy. He learned the value of finishing what he started and joy of personal accomplishment. These attributes carried him through a season that was full of hard work and fun, discouragement and resolve, defeat and victory. And at the very end, at the championship meet when he brought home his first place medal, you were among those who were so very proud of how far he had come. It is a victory to all of us. What amazes me is you’ve taught them skills that will last a lifetime. You’ve kindled in them a desire to excel. The medals, trophies and ribbons are all symbols of real gifts. These most certainly have had to come straight from your heart.

With appreciation,

A parent.

Whether it’s sports, yoga, or simple exercises, they play a crucial role in enhancing mental and physical well-being. Regular physical activity can also boost immunity and reduce the risk of illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, which are increasingly common among the youth today.

Moreover, it is well known that physical activities improve our mood and self-esteem. Students who engage in sports or other physical activities develop better time management skills and learn teamwork, perseverance, and leadership.

Incorporating physical activities into our daily routine doesn’t have to be difficult. A simple 30-minute walk, a session of yoga, or playing a sport after school can make a huge difference. It is essential for every student to recognize the importance of staying physically active for a healthy and productive life.

Poor Conservancy Service in Our City

By Ramya, Class X, TM Model School, Dharmapuri
The service provided by the conservancy workers in our city has become a growing concern. Streets across the city are littered with garbage, and many street corners are a dumping ground for waste thrown by residents. This not only spoils the beauty of our city but also poses serious health risks to the public.

The improper disposal of garbage leads to clogged drains, which cause waterlogging during the rainy season, and the stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This contributes to the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria, making it a matter of grave concern.

To improve this situation, strict regulations should be implemented, ensuring that garbage is disposed of properly. Regular cleaning of streets and proper waste management facilities should be put in place. Additionally, residents must be educated about the harmful effects of improper waste disposal. The local authorities should also increase their vigilance and impose penalties on those who throw garbage in public places.

It’s time we take responsibility for keeping our surroundings clean for the health and well-being of all.

iii. Recently while returning home from school you were knocked down by a speeding motorcycle. You escaped with minor injuries. You are Kishore/ Kavitha of class XI, studying in GHSS, Coimbatore. Also stress the importance of following traffic rules.

Concern About Road Accidents Due to Reckless Driving

By Kishore, Class XI, GHSS, Coimbatore
On a recent evening while returning home from school, I had a frightening experience when I was knocked down by a speeding motorcycle. Though I escaped with minor injuries, the incident left me deeply concerned about the increasing number of road accidents in our city due to reckless driving.

Motorcyclists and car drivers often ignore traffic rules, speeding through busy roads and endangering the lives of pedestrians and other drivers. This reckless behavior is one of the leading causes of accidents, many of which result in severe injuries or even death.

It is imperative for everyone on the road to follow traffic regulations to ensure safety. Wearing helmets, using seat belts, and avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving can significantly reduce the number of accidents. Additionally, traffic police should impose strict penalties on those who violate traffic rules and encourage responsible driving.

The growing number of accidents should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. Let’s work together to make our roads safer for everyone.

  • Appreciating the value of making amends and seeking reconciliation in relationships, understanding that it can bring closure and peace.
  • Recognizing how individuals can change and grow over time, leading to personal transformation and improved interpersonal dynamics.

3. Introduction: To introduce the lesson and stimulate thought, the teacher will pose the following questions to the students:

  • "It is natural for human beings to make mistakes. When we realise our mistakes, we should try to rectify them. If you get a chance to rectify your mistake or pay back for it......... what would you do and how would you correct it?"
    • (The teacher will facilitate a brief class discussion allowing students to share their initial thoughts and experiences related to the questions.)

4. Reading and Understanding:

  • Story Title: "The Attic"
  • Author: Satyajit Ray
  • Activity: Students will read the prose selection "The Attic". During the reading, they will be encouraged to identify and note down any unfamiliar words.
  • Vocabulary Discussion: The teacher will lead a discussion on the meanings of new or challenging words from the story's glossary, such as:
    • bifurcated (divided into two)
    • revive (to bring something back to life)
    • soothing (making someone feel calm)
    • rustic (typical of the countryside)
    • dilated (widened than usual)
    • ascertained (confirmed)
    • overwrought (state of being upset)
    • attic (the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof)

6. Consolidation and Presentation (Summary): "The Attic" by Satyajit Ray is a story that delves into the profound impact of past mistakes and the path to rectification and reconciliation. The narrative centers on Aditya, a successful businessman, who returns to his hometown of Bramhapur after 29 years, accompanied by his friend (the narrator). During their visit, Aditya expresses a desire to revisit Nagen Uncle's tea shop. There, they encounter Sasanka Sanyal, an old school acquaintance, now living a difficult life. Aditya's demeanor changes, leading him to confess to his friend that he had, in their childhood, taken a silver medal that Sanyal had won. Overwhelmed by a sense of responsibility and guilt, Aditya retrieves the long-hidden medal from the attic of his dilapidated ancestral home. He then presents it to Sanyal. Although Sanyal initially reacts with bitterness and rejects monetary compensation, preferring the actual medal, the act of restoring the rightful prize ultimately leads to a moment of quiet understanding and healing, highlighting the enduring nature of truth and the power of making amends. [Based on 2-18, 625-636].

7. Reinforcement:

  • Author's Legacy: Reinforce that Satyajit Ray was not only a renowned filmmaker but also a prolific author, particularly for young audiences, and a cultural figure who revived the children's magazine 'Sandesh'. His works, like "The Attic," often carry significant moral depth.
  • Cultural Specifics: Briefly revisit the cultural elements mentioned, such as Nankhatai (an Indian sweet) and the reference to Rabindranath Tagore's poem "Panraksha", to enrich students' understanding of the story's setting.
  • Universal Themes: Discuss how the themes of guilt, regret, and the need for closure are universal, even though the story is set in a specific cultural context. Emphasize that the "price of the medal" wasn't just monetary but also the weight of an uncorrected wrong.

8. Evaluation:

  • a) Lower Order Thinking Question: Who was Sasanka Sanyal, and what was his daily routine at Nagen uncle's tea shop?
  • b) Middle Order Thinking Question: How did Aditya's perception of his ancestral home, particularly the attic, change from his initial reluctance to revisit it to his later insistence?
  • c) Higher Order Thinking Question: Sasanka Sanyal states, "Aditya, this smacks too much of charity.". Explain the significance of this statement in the context of Sanyal's character and the story's central theme of rectification, rather than simple generosity.

9. Remedial Teaching: For slow learners, the teacher can implement the following strategies:

  • Guided Reading: Conduct a read-aloud session, pausing frequently to explain complex sentences, character actions, and motivations [Based on general pedagogical practice].
  • Story Segmentation: Break the story into smaller, manageable parts for reading and discussion, ensuring comprehension of each segment before moving on [Based on general pedagogical practice].
  • Character Tracing: Provide a simple graphic organizer for students to trace the journey and emotional state of Aditya and Sanyal throughout the story, noting key actions and reactions [Based on general pedagogical practice].
  • Vocabulary Reinforcement: Use flashcards or interactive games for the glossary words to help cement their meanings and usage [Based on general pedagogical practice, and the provided glossary].

10. Writing: Students will choose one of the following writing prompts:

  • Character Sketch: "Give a brief character sketch of Sasanka Sanyal."
  • Thematic Essay: "Man does change with time'-What were the various changes that came about in Aditya?"

11. Follow up:

  • Creative Extension: Instruct students to write a short paragraph or a dialogue depicting a hypothetical interaction between Aditya and Sanyal five years after the story ends, reflecting on their reconciliation.
  • Value Application: Assign an activity where students list three situations from their own experiences or observations where rectifying a mistake (even a small one) led to a positive outcome, and how it relates to the story's message.
