B. Answer the Questions

  1. Why was Mahesh brought to court?

Mahesh was brought to court because he neglected and ill-treated his books, school bag, and stationery.

  1. Was Mahesh punished for the ill-treatment of his belongings? Why?

No, he was given a second chance because it was his first offense.

  1. Why did the fellow brothers of Mr. Geography laugh at him?

They laughed because Mahesh had treated him poorly, and his maps were scribbled with random colors.

  1. What made Justice Mathematics turn red with anger?

He got angry when he heard that Mahesh threw his notebook against the wall in frustration.

  1. How was the court different from other courts?

The victims (books and stationery) decided the punishment instead of a judge.

  1. Why did they decide to forgive him? Who initiated the suggestion?

Ms. English suggested forgiveness because everyone deserves a second chance.

  1. Was it real or a dream? How could you say?

It was a dream because Mahesh woke up in his bed and realized his books were still in bad condition.

C. Read the Lines and Answer

  1. "You have to undo what you have done. Do you understand?"
    • a. Justice Mathematics said this to Mahesh.
    • b. He was asked to take care of his books and undo the damage he had done.
  2. "I especially envy my brother who belongs to Shobitha."
    • a. Mr. Geography envies his brother, another Geography book.
    • b. His brother was well-maintained, covered, and neatly used by Shobitha.
  3. "I don't mean to interrupt, Your Honour, it is just that I feel that everyone deserves a second chance and, after all, this is Mahesh's first offense, he deserves a little consideration."
    • a. It shows that the speaker is kind, fair, and forgiving.
    • b. The word ‘I’ refers to Ms. English.

D. Think and Answer

  • If you were Ms. English, would you do the same? Why or Why not? Justify your answer.

If I were Ms. English, I would have done the same and forgiven Mahesh. Everyone makes mistakes, and since this was his first offense, he deserved a second chance to improve. Instead of punishing him harshly, giving him an opportunity to realize his mistake and correct it was the right decision. Ms. English showed kindness and wisdom by believing in change. Her forgiveness helped Mahesh become more responsible, and in the end, he took great care of his books. This teaches us that patience and understanding can bring about real change in others.
