Character Sketch of Prospero

Prospero is the central character in The Tempest and the rightful Duke of Milan. He is a powerful magician who controls the spirits, especially Ariel. Prospero is highly intelligent and uses his magic to bring his enemies to the island. He is also a loving father who deeply cares for Miranda and educates her well. Though he initially appears harsh, he is just and forgiving, as seen when he ultimately forgives Antonio and the King of Naples. His wisdom and sense of justice lead him to give up his magical powers once his goals are achieved. Prospero’s character evolves from being vengeful to merciful, making him one of Shakespeare’s most complex and fascinating protagonists.

2. Narrate how Prospero made his enemies repent to restore his dukedom.

Prospero used his magical powers to create a storm that brought his enemies—his brother Antonio and the King of Naples—to the island. With the help of Ariel, he confused and frightened them, making them suffer from guilt and remorse. Ariel appeared to them as a harpy and reminded them of their past wrongdoings. Overcome with fear and regret, Antonio and the King repented for their betrayal. Finally, Prospero revealed himself, forgave them, and agreed to return to Milan with them, regaining his dukedom.
