C. Answer the questions given below in a paragraph of 150 words

1. Describe briefly the contents of the letter written by Tom’s uncle.

Tom’s uncle’s letter to him was filled with both promise and menace. It claimed that the iron box contained a great collection of rare and valuable gems — rubies, diamonds, and pearls, including the famous green and blue pearls. However, the letter also revealed that the box had a deadly mechanism that would explode nine and a half ounces of his improved dynamite if unlocked. The uncle mockingly told Tom that he could either doubt the truth and risk death or believe him and live forever with unfulfilled expectations. The letter reflected the uncle’s cruel humour and his hatred for Tom’s mother’s family. It left Tom in a state of fear and confusion, torn between greed and the dread of death.

2. Explain the efforts taken by Tom to open the iron box. Did he succeed? Why?

Tom was both frightened and fascinated by the iron box. At first, he planned to open it from a safe distance by using wires to trigger the lock, but he feared the explosion would destroy the precious stones. He then spent many sleepless nights thinking of ways to open it safely, even consulting experts like Professor Clinch and Dr. Schaff. He read books on dynamite and explosives, and his obsession grew so intense that people thought he was insane. Despite all his efforts, he never dared to open the box, fearing it might blow up and kill him. His attempts ended in failure because his fear overpowered his greed, and the mystery of the box remained unsolved.
