- Answer: She told the traveller that there was no food there and that they were all poor and hungry.

- Answer: The ingredients added to the soup were:
  - A large, round stone
  - Water
  - Salt and butter
  - Onions and potatoes
  - Carrots and beans
  - Pieces of chicken
Why did the villagers come out of their homes?
- Answer: They came out because they followed the delicious smell of the soup and heard the news about a traveller making soup out of a single stone.
Was the soup really made of stone? How do you know?
- Answer: No, it was not. We know this because when the traveller pulled the stone out of the pot at the end, the stone was still completely whole. The villagers realized that the delicious soup came from all the vegetables and chicken they had shared.
