6. Consolidation and Presentation

Summary

Being Safe is a lesson about protecting ourselves from dangers in our everyday surroundings. Prasanth visits his grandparents in Nagathi during his vacation. His grandfather teaches him and his friends several important safety measures.

First, Grandpa explains road safety. Children should walk on the right side of the road facing traffic. Before crossing, they should look right, left and right again. They should walk in a line and should not use mobile phones while walking.

Next, Grandpa explains sun safety. Children should avoid unnecessary exposure to the scorching sun, especially during the hottest hours. They should play in shady places and use sunscreen. Headache, giddiness, nausea and excessive heat can be warning signs of heat-related illness, and children should immediately inform an adult.

Finally, Grandpa explains home and cyber safety. Children should not play with knives or scissors. Medicines, fertilizers, antifreeze and other hazardous substances should be kept safely away from children. Medicines should be stored in locked cabinets and in their original containers. Children should also protect themselves online by not sharing personal information, photographs or vacation plans on social media.

The lesson teaches us that safety is everyone's responsibility and that awareness and careful behaviour can protect us from many dangers.

7. Reinforcement

The teacher gives the following additional information:

Road Safety

  • Always obey traffic signals.

  • Use a zebra crossing wherever available.

  • Never run across a busy road.

  • Wear a helmet while riding a bicycle or two-wheeler.

  • Use a seat belt while travelling in a car.

Heat Safety

  • Drink sufficient water.

  • Wear light and comfortable clothing in hot weather.

  • Take breaks in a cool or shady place.

  • Inform an adult immediately if you feel unwell in extreme heat.

Home Safety

  • Do not touch electrical appliances with wet hands.

  • Keep sharp objects away from young children.

  • Never taste unknown chemicals or medicines.

  • Keep emergency telephone numbers easily accessible.

Cyber Safety

  • Never share passwords with strangers.

  • Do not meet an online stranger without informing a trusted adult.

  • Think carefully before posting anything online.

  • Report suspicious online activity to a trusted adult.

Emergency Preparedness

A basic first-aid kit may contain items such as:

  • Adhesive bandages

  • Sterile gauze

  • Antiseptic supplies

  • Clean gloves

  • Basic first-aid materials

8. Evaluation

  4. Why do you think safety rules should become habits rather than being followed only when adults are watching?

9. Remedial Teaching

For slow learners, the teacher can:

  • Use pictures and real-life objects to explain each safety rule.

  • Teach the lesson in small sections rather than as one complete lesson.

  • Provide a simple picture-based mind map.

  • Use repetition for important rules such as:

    • Right – Left – Right

    • Stop – Look – Listen – Cross

    • Keep medicines locked

    • Don't share personal information

  • Teach vocabulary using pictures, gestures and simple examples.

  • Pair slow learners with supportive classmates.

  • Conduct role-play activities such as:

    • Crossing a road safely.

    • Responding to extreme heat.

    • Handling a cyber-safety situation.

  • Give short oral questions before written questions.

  • Allow students to answer using keywords initially.

  • Provide fill-in-the-blanks and matching exercises for vocabulary.

Remedial Activity

Match the safety rule with the correct action:

  1. Road → a) Keep medicines locked

  2. Sun → b) Look right, left and right

  3. Medicine → c) Use sunscreen

  4. Internet → d) Don't share personal information
