Section I

1.

  1. What made the trip a memorable one?
The trip was memorable because the children experienced a beautiful toy train journey through scenic mountains, saw a baby elephant on the tracks up close, and witnessed how their classmate Muthu cleverly guided it away using bananas. The slow pace of the train also allowed them to enjoy the landscapes, waterfalls, and nature sounds, which added to the unforgettable experience.
  2. What does the phrase ‘presence of mind’ mean? Explain the phrase using Muthu’s action.

His clever thinking and brave action helped avoid a serious problem without causing harm.
  3. What is the difference between this toy train and a normal train?

SPEAKING

H. Travelling can help a person to understand and appreciate different places. Discuss in groups and talk about the places you have visited recently. Present your experiences to the class.

ANSWER :

Good morning, everyone!

Today, I’m going to talk about some of the places I’ve visited recently. Traveling is a wonderful way to learn about new places, different cultures, and the world around us. I’m excited to share my experiences!

First, I’ll talk about the mountains.

A few months ago, my family and I went on a trip to the hill stations in the mountains. We visited a beautiful place called Munnar in Kerala. The moment we reached there, I was amazed by the lush green tea plantations all around. The air was so fresh, and it felt so peaceful. We went on a trek up a hill, and from the top, we could see the entire valley below. It was like looking at a picture. I learned that the tea grown there is famous all over the world! I even got to try some fresh tea, and it tasted so good.

Next, I want to talk about a historical place we visited.

We went to Delhi, the capital city of India, and visited the Red Fort. It was really exciting because I had heard about it in history class. The fort is so huge and made of beautiful red sandstone. When I was walking around inside, I could almost imagine how the kings and queens must have lived there a long time ago. We also visited India Gate, a monument that honors soldiers who died during World War I. I could feel the respect everyone had for the place.

Finally, let me tell you about a beach I visited.

We went to Goa, which is famous for its beautiful beaches. I went with my cousins, and we had so much fun playing in the sand and swimming in the sea. The sunset there was amazing! The sky turned all shades of orange, pink, and purple. I learned that Goa has a really cool mix of cultures, and the food was delicious—especially the seafood!

Each of these places taught me something different. In Munnar, I saw how nature can be so peaceful and beautiful. In Delhi, I learned about history and culture. And in Goa, I got to experience the relaxed beach life and different traditions. Traveling has helped me understand how diverse and interesting our world is.

Thank you for listening to my experiences. I hope you all get a chance to visit some amazing places too!

H. Look at the picture of a village festival carefully. Talk about the activities that are going on by using the hints given in the help box.

About the place and the people — what is happening: what do the children and the

adults do? – kind of shops – performances

Look at the picture of the village festival carefully.

The village looks very lively and colorful today! It’s clear that a festival is taking place. There are lots of activities happening around the village, and people seem to be enjoying the celebration.

About the place and the people:

The village is decorated with colorful banners and lights. You can see large tents set up, and people are walking around in traditional clothes, smiling and chatting. The atmosphere is cheerful and welcoming. There are both adults and children involved in various activities.

What is happening:

In one part of the village, there is a stage where performances are taking place. I can see some dancers performing traditional folk dances, and the crowd is clapping and cheering. It looks like the dancers are wearing beautiful, colorful costumes, and the music is lively, making everyone want to get up and join in. On the other side, there’s a group of people watching a play that looks like a local story being told through acting and music.

What do the children and the adults do?

The children are having a lot of fun running around, playing games, and eating sweets. Some kids are participating in a race, while others are enjoying the rides at the fairground. There are balloons and toys, and they are all laughing and playing with their friends. Meanwhile, the adults are shopping at the local stalls. Some are buying handmade crafts, while others are picking up fresh fruits and vegetables. There is also a food stall selling hot snacks like fried foods and sweets.

Kind of shops:

The shops in the festival are selling all sorts of things! There are stalls with beautiful handcrafted jewelry, bright fabrics, and even some paintings that showcase the local art. In another part of the festival, you can see a shop selling fresh flowers and plants, and next to it, there’s a stall with local spices and sweets that smell delicious.

Performances:

As I mentioned earlier, there’s a stage where traditional dance performances are taking place. There is also a musical performance where a local band is playing folk music with traditional instruments. The crowd seems to really enjoy it, and some people are even dancing along to the beat!

P. The Pooja holidays are about to start. Prasanth and Deepak are friends. Both their families have planned to go on a trip to Munnar. Develop a conversation on how they plan for their trip.

Plan:

 How many days for the trip?

 What mode of transport to use?

 Which route to take?

 Which hotel to book for the stay?

 What are the tourist spots to be visited?

 What are the things to be packed for the trip?

Answer :

Prasanth: Hey Deepak! The Pooja holidays are almost here. Have you thought about our trip to Munnar?

Deepak: Yes, I’ve been thinking about it! I’m so excited! How many days do you think we should stay there?

Prasanth: I think we should go for about 3 days. That should be enough to explore the place and relax.

Deepak: Sounds good to me! What mode of transport are we taking? Should we go by train or car?

Prasanth: I think we should go by car. It’s more comfortable, and we can enjoy the scenic views on the way. Plus, we can stop for some photos and snacks whenever we want!

Deepak: That’s a great idea! Which route do you think we should take?

Prasanth: We could take the Coimbatore route to Munnar. It’s a good road, and we’ll get to pass through some beautiful landscapes. What do you think?

Deepak: I agree. That sounds like a fun route! Now, we need to decide on a hotel to stay at. Do you have any suggestions?

Prasanth: I’ve heard that the Tata Tea Museum Resort is a great place to stay. It’s near the tea plantations, and the views are amazing. The rooms look cozy too. What do you think?

Deepak: That sounds perfect! Let’s book it in advance. Now, what are the tourist spots we should visit while we’re there?

Prasanth: Definitely Eravikulam National Park! We can see the famous Nilgiri Tahr there. Also, we can visit Mattupetty Dam, Attukal Waterfalls, and the Tea Gardens. What do you think? Any other places?

Deepak: Those are great! I also read about the Kundala Lake. We can rent pedal boats there. We should also check out Echo Point – I’ve heard it’s fun!

Prasanth: Oh yes, that sounds fun! Now, for packing. What do you think we should bring?

Deepak: I’m thinking we should pack light clothes, but also carry some warm clothes because it gets chilly in the evenings. Don’t forget the sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes for walking. What else?

Prasanth: Oh, and we should pack some snacks for the road trip, and a camera to take photos. Maybe a first-aid kit too, just in case.

Deepak: Perfect! Looks like we have everything covered. I can’t wait for this trip!

Prasanth: Me too! It’s going to be so much fun. Let’s make sure to book everything soon!
