Unit-4 – Supplementary- The cat and the pain killer
Warm up
There
has always been a close bonding between children and animals. Studies have
revealed that living with pet animals increases empathy, compassion and self-esteem
among children.
Do
you have a pet at home?
If
yes, what animal is it and what is its name?
Did
you have any humourous moments with it? If yes, what was it?
How
do you care for your pets?
Yes, I
have a pet at home! 🐾
- What animal is it
and what is its name?
My pet is a dog and his name is Rocky. He’s a golden retriever with floppy ears and a wagging tail that never stops! - Did you have any
humorous moments with it? If yes, what was it?
Yes! One time, Rocky saw his own reflection in the mirror and started barking at it. He got so confused that he ran to the other side of the mirror to "find" the other dog. We all laughed so much! - How do you care
for your pet?
I feed Rocky twice a day, give him fresh water, and take him for walks every evening. I also help give him a bath and brush his fur. When he's scared during thunderstorms, I sit with him and pet him to keep him calm.

Answer the following questions in about 80–100 words.
- Describe the
different types of remedies tried by Aunt Polly on Tom.
Aunt Polly tried many strange remedies on Tom when he became sad and dull. She believed in new medicines and health treatments. First, she used the water treatment — pouring cold water on him, wrapping him in wet sheets, and putting him under blankets. Then she gave him sitz baths, hot baths, and even blister-plasters. When none of that worked, she added oatmeal diets and painkillers. Aunt Polly truly wanted to cure Tom, but her methods were more painful than helpful, and they only made Tom more frustrated. - Narrate the funny
sequence between Tom Sawyer and Peter, the cat.
Tom was tired of taking medicine, so he started pouring the painkiller into a crack in the floor. One day, Peter the cat came near and seemed curious. Tom jokingly warned him, but Peter still wanted it. So, Tom gave him a spoonful. Immediately, Peter jumped up in the air, ran around like crazy, knocked over things, danced, and finally flew out the window with some flower pots. Aunt Polly saw the chaos and was shocked. Tom said Peter enjoyed it and did it out of pity since Peter didn’t have an aunt! It made Aunt Polly laugh and feel a bit guilty.
