Unit -5 – Little Cyclone : The Story of a Grizzly Cub

Video Explainer of the lesson

Warm up :

Work with a partner and discuss the following questions. Share your views with the class.

1. Why are some animals endangered?
Some animals become endangered because of hunting, loss of forest habitats, pollution, and climate change. Human activities such as deforestation and poaching are the main reasons.

2. Why do wild animals from the forest often enter the human living spaces?
Wild animals enter human living areas when their natural habitats are destroyed or when they search for food and water. Expansion of cities and farms reduces their living space.

3. Are animals happy in wildlife rehabilitation centres?
Animals may not be completely happy in rehabilitation centres because they miss their freedom. However, they are safe, cared for, and treated well until they can return to the wild.

4. Can a rehab animal survive in the wild?
Yes, if the animal is properly trained and still remembers its natural instincts, it can survive. But some animals raised in captivity find it difficult to adjust to the wild.

5. How many types of bear do you think are there living in the world today?
There are eight types of bears in the world:

  1. American Black Bear
  2. Brown Bear (Grizzly Bear)

1. Describe the appearance of Little Cyclone.

2. What does the fight Little Cyclone and his brother put up, tell you about the nature of grizzly bears?

 3. "If any of you fellows think there is anything coming to you from me, come and take it". How did Little Cyclone prove this?

4. Describe the confrontation between Little Czar and Little Cyclone.

1. Describe the appearance of Little Cyclone.

Little Cyclone was a small grizzly cub from Alaska. He had a thick coat of grizzly-gray fluffy hair and two sparkling black eyes that shone like jet beads. His nose was short and pudgy, giving him a cute appearance. Except for his high shoulders, he looked like a big bundle of grey fur standing on four short legs. Though small in size, he possessed strong claws and the true grizzly spirit. His roguish and droll appearance made him look adorable, but his courage and strength showed that he was not to be underestimated.

2. What does the fight Little Cyclone and his brother put up tell you about the nature of grizzly bears?

When the cubs were captured after their mother was shot, both fought fiercely to protect themselves. They bit, scratched, and resisted with all their might. One cub even fought so ferociously that his captor had to let him go. This shows that grizzly bears are naturally brave, strong-willed, and full of fighting spirit. Even when small, they are not afraid of danger. Their courage and determination are part of their nature, proving that grizzlies are born fighters who never give up easily.

3. “If any of you fellows think there is anything coming to you from me, come and take it.” How did Little Cyclone prove this?

When Little Cyclone was released into the Bears’ Nursery, he fearlessly stood in the centre, showing no sign of fear. A European brown bear cub, Little Czar, came forward and struck him playfully, but Cyclone immediately hit back with his paw, making Czar flee in fear. Then a black bear cub, twice his size, attacked him, but Cyclone struck back with such power that the bear ran away and climbed the cliff. By bravely meeting every challenge, Cyclone proved his words true and earned respect from all the bears in the Nursery.

4. Describe the confrontation between Little Czar and Little Cyclone.

Little Czar, a European brown bear cub, was mischievous and bold. When Little Cyclone arrived at the Nursery, Czar approached him and tried to test his courage by giving him a blow on the ear. But Little Cyclone, quick as a flash, struck back with his right paw, hitting Czar hard on the head. Surprised and frightened by the unexpected counterattack, Czar ran away in wild haste. This short encounter proved that Cyclone was fearless and strong despite his small size, earning the respect of all other bears.

Little Cyclone was a grizzly cub from Alaska who earned his name by the vigour of his resistance to ill-treatment. When his mother was fired at, they ran away as fast as they could. The next day at sunrise the two orphans found themselves in the hands of men. One of them escaped by fighting so fiercely. So the captor let him go. But the other cub was caught, chained, and taken to the Zoological Park at New York. The Zoological Park had a Bears’ Nursery with several cubs. Usually a newcomer is badly scared on his first day but Cyclone was different. When the box was opened he stood up with courage and looked around bravely.
